Secret Invasion: a Furious Failure
It’s no secret that Marvel’s Disney+ shows haven’t been hitting the mark. You could probably draw the whole of the MCU’s Phase 4 shows like a playground slide, with WandaVision and Loki at the top followed by a long descent down to the bottom, with maybe a few small bumps along the way for Ms Marvel. Phase 4 went so poorly that it feels like Disney just shuffled it along and tried to move us straight into Phase 5, foregoing the traditional “Avengers level threat” that capped off every other Phase and just taking us straight into a new year… with Ant-man 3 which no one liked either. Secret Invasion is the first show of Phase 5 and unfortunately it seems this change of Phases hasn’t shaken off the Phase 4 cobwebs, because Secret Invasion deserves to be right at the end of the slide. What makes a piece of…
The Many Failures of The Book of Boba Fett
I think it’s fair to say that my reaction to The Book of Boba Fett was never going to be unbiased. Like many Star Wars fans I was immediately snared by his cool armor in the films and stuck around for the “Legends” content that came after before Disney swept every non-film/TV show off the table for the sake of building their own universe. There we saw Fett surviving his unglamorous end in the Sarlacc Pit and continuing his bounty hunting adventures for many more years, as well as some looks into his time before the fall of the Empire and everything in between. So yes, I’m a fan of the character; and as a fan I was as excited as anyone else to see Fett’s return in The Mandalorian and him picking up his own spin-off, even more so when it was such uncharted territory as Fett taking over…
Daredevil Season 3 Review
January 11th, 2019 This season of Daredevil is one of those amazing moments in media where you realize why previous entries in the franchise haven’t been quite up to the level you’ve been expecting. Daredevil season 1 was an excellent Netflix series that only lost steam at the very end, with great characters and action scenes that held it all together from start to finish. The rest of the Marvel Netflix shows have ranged from good to terrible, but all have been missing… something. Finally, with this newest showing of Daredevil, we have our answer about what the other series have lacked. The key is “purpose,” a feeling like the show is actually going places and doesn’t spin its wheels for several episodes because there isn’t enough story to make up thirteen hours. Daredevil season 3 has exactly that: a purpose, a driving force, and a pace that rarely feels…
Star Wars Rise of Skywalker Rant/Review
December 21st, 2019 THIS IS FULL OF SPOILERS. It takes a lot to land a huge, overarching storyline, particularly one that’s been going on for over a decade. Avengers Infinity War and Endgame somehow managed to pull it off and deliver an enjoyable finale, which was especially impressive when you consider that it had to also contend with a roster of over twenty characters. Unfortunately, Star Wars The Rise of Skywalker fails to meet the same standard, ignoring logic, rules of storytelling, and things that have been established before in favor of pushing out a story that they hope won’t upset as many people as Last Jedi did. So yeah, I didn’t love this movie. What follows is my traditional three part review “list” but rather than “Loved, Neutral, and Hated” like I normally do I’m instead going to do “Good Things, Problems, and Nitpicks”. Because I had a LOT…
